1. desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfillment; 2. someone or something on which hopes are centered; 3. to desire with expectation of obtainment; 4. to expect with confidence.
Hope in the Biblical sense is to have confidence in Christ, to joyfully wait, to rest in truth, to be vibrant in life. Throughout scriptures, hope is an encouragement, a reminder in times of trouble. Job is the first man in the bible to speak of hope. Job’s heartache, trials and persecution led him to the hope that God would sustain him. Paul says in Romans that we cannot hope for something seen, but for what is unseen. Hope is not meant to minimize trials, hurts or difficulties…it is what sustains us through them. This type of hope enables us not just to live, but to live victoriously. It is what makes us “more than a conqueror”. Applying hope always brings infinite joy and rest.
“Hope fills the afflicted soul with such inward joy and consolation, that it can laugh while tears are in the eye, sigh and sing all in a breath, it is called “the rejoicing of hope.” (Hebrews 3:6 (KJV)) -William Gurnall
Worship the God of Hope
Father, You delight in those who hope in Your unfailing love. Lord, be delighted with our lives. Father, in the face of despair, may the hope that You give, allow us to see Your face. May our hope glorify You as we are tested and tried.
